The FS: EDT 2011 Got the 3rd Place!

Our current regional titleholders travelled to Viña del Mar for 5 days to represent the entire 4th region at the 2011's National Tournament of English Debates, organized by the Ministry of Education through the English Opens Doors Programm and the British Council.

On Tuesday, 15th, after one day from the official arrival, the preliminary competition started up and after 4 different rounds debating against others regional titleholders the motion "This house believes that face to face communication is better than any other type of communication" our team successfully got the 3rd place, becoming into one of the top 3 best debate teams during this year's tournament. The group composed by Javier Diaz, Nicolás Rodriguez, María Ignacia Cantuarias, Francisco Sierra, Rocio Campusano and Rodrigo Beltrán showed up their best to try to impress the panel of judges that was composed mainly by Native Speakers, Volunteers from the EODP and authorities from the British Council.

After 7 hours debating, the results were the following ones:

1st Place: Instituto San Pablo Misionero

(from the Metropolitan Región)

2nd Place: Fundación Fernández León

(from the 5th Region)

3rd Place: Francis School

(from the 4th Region)

Dear Debaters: The entire 4th region is proud of the work you have done and our network is proud to have amazing students as you are. Congratulations and Good Job!

The FS: EDT 2011 Won the Regional Competition!

On last October, 19th the current members from the 2011's Francis School: English Debate Team (FS: EDT) made their final presentation at the Regional Competition for this year's Tournament of English Debates at the SECREDUC.

The team, composed by Nicolás Rodriguez (1st Speaker), Francisco Sierra (2nd Speaker), Rocio Campusano (3rd Speaker) and Rodrigo Beltrán (4th Speaker) had to defend the motion "This House Believes that Smoking should be Prohibited in all Public Places" against the Debaters from Colegio Santa María de Ovalle.

Both teams did their best to impress the panel of judges, which that day was exclusively composed by:
Harvest Ficker: English Language Fellow from the English Opens Doors Programm
Yudith Plaza: English Teacher from England and Methodologist at Universidad de La Serena
Jorge Olivares: Master and PhD in English Linguistics

After both teams finished their speeches, the judges deliberated and came up with the following results:
Colegio Santa Maria de Ovalle (Representing the Limari Province): 120 scores
Francis School (Representing the Elqui and Choapa Province): 131 scores

In this way, our school became for the 3rd time into the Regional Winner for the Tournament of English Debates and along with it, all the debaters as well as the 2 teachers in charge, got the exclusive chance to represent the entire 4th region at the National Tournament of English Debates 2011 (to be held during November in Valparaiso)

The FS: EDT 2011 Won the Provincial Competition!

Last September - 28th, The 2011's Francis School: English Debate Team (FS: EDT) made its Final presentation at the Provincial Competition of this year's Tournament of English Debates, at SECREDUC in La Serena.

The team, composed by Javier Diaz (1st Speaker), Maria Ignacia Cantuarias (2nd Speaker), Rocio Campusano (3rd Speaker) and Rodrigo Beltrán (4th Speaker) had to defend the motion "This House Believes that School Uniforms Should be Compulsory" against the Debaters from Colegio Andres Bello.

Important to mention, that our team successfully won this debate, with a total score of 135 out of 140, becoming into one of the highest scores ever reached by the FS: EDT since 2006 on.

To sum up, as Francis School got the highest score, it will finally represent the provinces of Elqui and Choapa in the unique debate for the Regional Competition, that will take place the upcoming October, 19th. in which the Francis School will have to compete against the debaters from Colegio Santa María de Ovalle the following motion: "This House Believes that Smoking Should be Prohibited in Public Places"

They are a step closer to win the Regional Competition to represent the entire 4th region! so let the best win!

The FS: EDT 2011 Won the 2nd Round!

Last September, 02nd, The Francis School English Debate Team (FS: EDT) made its presentation at the 2nd round of the Provincial Competition of this year's Tournament of English Debates at SECREDUC in La Serena. The team, composed by Francisco Sierra (1st Speaker), Maria Ignacia Cantuarias (2nd Speaker), Rodrigo Beltrán (3rd Speaker) and Rocio Campsuno (4th Speaker) had to defend the motion "This House Believes that Children Should Attend to Different Schools According to their Academic Abilities"

Our team successfully won this 2nd round of the Provincial Competition, with a total score of 245! Becoming in this way, into the team with the highest score that day; here you have the official results provided by the SECREDUC:

The final debate of the Provincial Competition, will take place the upcoming September, 28th at 10am at SECREDUC, La Serena.

The New Delegates from Francis School!

This morning of August, 31st; The Francis School did the 4th Internal Spelling-Bee Contest, in which over more than 10 students from 5th and 6th Grade had to spell different words in 3 different rounds:

Round One (All Contestants)

Students had to spell written words.

Round Two (Only 9 Contestants)

Students had to spell words by looking at their respective pictures.

Round Three (Only 4 Contestants)

Students had to listen to some words, provided by the panel of Judges, and then to spell them.

After going through different rounds, the Judges had to look for the students with the Highest Scores and with No-Spelling Mistakes; And the results were the following ones:

1º Place: Javier Valderrama

2º Place: Josefina Cofré

3º Place: Andres Blanco

4º Place: Gabriella Castillo

Important to mention that 1st and the 2nd places, have now the responsibility to represent the school at the Spelling Bee-Contest of the ITN English Tournament 2011, that will take place this upcoming, October - 24th in Coquimbo.

The FS: EDT 2011 Won the 1st Round!

Last Friday, 19th; The Francis School English Debate Team (FS: EDT) debuted at this year's Tournament of English Debates at SECREDUC in La Serena. The team, composed by Javier Diaz (1st Speaker), Maria Ignacia Cantuarias (2nd Speaker), Rodrigo Beltrán (3rd Speaker) and Nicolás Rodriguez (4th Speaker) had to defend the opposite side of the motion "This House Believes that Children Should Attend to Different Schools According to their Academic Abilities" Against the proposition team, composed by students from Colegio Gerónimo Rendic.

After 30 minutes debating, our team successfully won the round with a total score of 124 out of 130! Becoming in this way, into the team with the highest score that day.

Important to mention, that the 2nd and final round for this Year's Provincial Competition, will take place the upcoming September, 02nd at SECREDUC and that day, 3 of the schools with the highest scores, will go straight to Regional Competition that will take place on the 3rd week of September.

The ITN English Tournament 2011 Has Been Confirmed!

According to the Improving Together Network (ITN), the project to do the 2nd version of the ITN English Tournament has now turned into a fact! The highly awaited English Tournament will take place this year from October, 24th till October, 28th at the Francis School's Auditorium.

This year's tournament consists of 5 different competitions:

Song Festival (Exclusive for 1st and 2nd graders)

Role Play Competition (Exclusive for 3rd and 4th graders)

Spelling Bee Contest (Exclusive for 5th and 6th graders)

Public Speaking Competition (Exclusive for 7th and 8th graders)

Tournament of English Debates (Exclusive for High School graders)

And to turn this project into a massive event, the ITN has decided to invite over 30 schools (20 more than the previous year) and here you have the official list:

1. Song Festival

Each school decides the song to be presented, it may be a well-known song or even a jazz chant.

2. Role Play Competition

The dialogues must be created by the students and it may be related to any topic.

3. Spelling Bee Contest

For the spelling bee contest, an exclusive word-list has been created. For you to take a look at the official list, we invite you to download the file (for free) in our menu section.

4. Public Speaking Competition

Students will have to present a speech related to the following topic: "Chile and its traditions, myths, celebrations, legends, writers, poets or any important aspect related to the history of our country"

5. Tournament of English Debates

Each team will have to create arguments to defend both sides of the following motion: "This House Believes that Pop Music Doesn't Communicate Meaningful Messages to Young People"

The 2011's Francis School's EDT Says "YES, WE ARE IN!"

After several meetings, the 2011's Francis School English Debate Team (EDT) agreed to take part of this Year's Debate Tournament, which is organized by the Ministry of Education and the English Open Doors Program. The competition is set to start on August and will probably finish by the end of November.

Network's June Meeting

On Friday, 17th we had our June's meeting with the members of the Teacher's Network, this time we had the pleasure of getting to know Harvest Flicker, She's currently working for the Ministry of Education as English Language Fellow in Coquimbo. This meeting also counted with the participation of Maria Cecilia Santander, who is in charge of the English Open Doors Program (Coquimbo).

The main topic discussed was the 2nd version of the Francis School English Tournament; which is a project done by the Improving Together Net and that is set to take place by the end of October.

Se Realizó la Primera Versión del Francis School English Tournaments en Coquimbo

El Francis School English Tournaments en la Región de Coquimbo fue un proyecto realizado por Carmen Alcaíno Rosas (Profesora de Inglés y Coordinadora General del Departamento de Inglés de ese establecimiento) en conjunto con José Espinoza (Ex campeón nacional de Debates en Inglés 2008 y actual estudiante de la carrera de pedagogía en ese idioma) quienes trabajaron durante todo un semestre en la creación de la actividad. En el evento, que fue llevado a cabo por el Departamento de Inglés del Colegio Francis School y la Red Pedagógica Local Improving Together, se enfrentaron más de 12 establecimientos educacionales de la zona, quienes participaron en las competencias de Spelling Bee, Public Speaking y Debates en Inglés.

El objetivo principal del proyecto, y de las tres competencias que lo conformaron, fue dar a conocer la importancia de este idioma a la comunidad, mostrando avances y logros en las destrezas lingüísticas que han estado siendo desarrolladas por los y las estudiantes de la región, así como también el arduo trabajo realizado por los y las docentes del área.

El jurado, encargado de escoger a los ganadores de las 3 competencias, estuvo compuesto principalmente por voluntarios(as) anglo-parlantes que han estado apoyando la enseñanza del inglés en establecimientos educacionales de la zona. En la oportunidad, el ganador del Primer Lugar en el Torneo de Spelling Bee fue el Colegio Santa Marta, mientras el Primer Lugar en el Torneo de Public Speaking lo obtuvo el Colegio Los Carrera y el Primer Lugar en el Torneo de Debates en Inglés se lo adjudicaron los estudiantes Felipe Díaz, Marcel Dussert, Miguel Medina y Felipe Tello, del Francis School.

La actividad contó con la asistencia de importantes figuras de la zona, incluyendo a los representantes regionales del Programa Inglés Abre Puertas y miembros de la SECREDUC.
